Supports for Living is committed to protecting and upholding the privacy and dignity of all stakeholders, including participants, staff, management, and representatives of agencies we deal with. We adhere to the NDIS (Quality and Safeguards) Commission rules and regulations and follow the guidelines of the Australian Privacy Principles in our information management practices.

Privacy and Dignity: We ensure that participants understand and agree to the collection, storage, and handling of their personal information, including audio and/or visual recordings.

Clear Communication: Participants are informed of our privacy policies using the language, mode of communication, and terms most likely to be understood. Easy Read documents are available to all participants.

Legal and Ethical Obligations: We meet our legal and ethical obligations in protecting the privacy of participants and organizational personnel.

Confidentiality: Participants and organizational personnel are assured of privacy and confidentiality during interviews or discussions of personal or sensitive matters.

Staff Awareness: All staff, management, and volunteers are trained to understand and meet these privacy obligations.

Compliance
This policy conforms to the Federal Privacy Act (1988) and the Australian Privacy Principles, governing the collection, use, and storage of personal information. It applies to all records, whether hard copy or electronic, and to interviews or discussions of a sensitive personal nature.
Procedures for Dealing with Personal Information
In dealing with personal information, Supports for Living staff will:

Ensure privacy during interviews or discussions of personal or sensitive matters.

Use fair and lawful methods to collect personal information, with the individual's consent.

Inform individuals about the type of personal information held, its purpose, and how it is collected, used, disclosed, and accessed.

Ensure personal information is accurate, complete, and up-to-date, allowing individuals to review or correct their information.

Protect personal information from misuse, loss, unauthorized access, modification, or disclosure.

Destroy or permanently de-identify personal information no longer needed after legal retention requirements expire.

Responsibilities for Managing Privacy

Staff Responsibility: All staff are responsible for managing personal information they access.

Director's Responsibility: The Director oversees the content of Supports for Living publications, communications, and the website, ensuring appropriate consent for personal information inclusion and compliance with privacy principles. The Director safeguards personal information related to staff, management, and contractors, and ensures that all staff are familiar with privacy policies and procedures.

Privacy Information for Participants
At the first interview, participants are informed about the type of information collected, how their privacy will be protected, and their rights concerning their data. Participants must consent to information sharing between our organization and government bodies. They are also offered the opportunity to opt-out of any NDIS information sharing during audits.
